What causes vehicle batteries to die?
Car batteries are basically energy storage devices, providing a current at a particular voltage. A chemical reaction inside the battery initiates the voltage and current the battery generates. Winter temperatures cause expansion and contraction in the discharge and recharge cycles. This leads to sediment developing in the battery and shorting it out. In hot weather, deterioration can result from excessive heat and vibration, or water loss. The battery dies when these issues result in the battery no longer sustaining a discharge current.
